CULTURAL CROYDON

Croydon is rich in cultural history. Many famous artistic figures lived here, from Sherlock Holmes’ creator Arthur Conan Doyle to DH Lawrence and French novelist Émile Zola.


The Fairfield Complex is home of London Mozart Players, a world-class chamber orchestra. It also includes the Ashcroft Theatre, which regularly hosts world-class entertainment.


Located in the town hall is the Clocktower Complex, which offers an extensive range of cultural and arts resources. These include exhibition galleries; ‘Lifetimes’, an award winning interactive display of local history; the multi-purpose Braithwaite Hall and the David Lean Cinema, which screens specialist films.


Croydon also hosts the Surrey Street Market which has been going consistently since 1922. (although some records date back as far as 1276). On November 29th 1994, the market was honored by a visit from Prince Charles, who was reportedly fascinated by the lively scene.


And of course there’s the Warehouse Theatre, with its new home at Ruskin Square.
